Is the Lab the #1 dog in the country?

For one more year, according the American Kennel Club, the Labrador Retriever is again the #1 dog in the country. Unfortunately, this is a little misleading. Read this line closely:
AKC says more than twice as many labs were registered in the U.S. in 2008 as Yorkshire terriers - the No. 2 dog on the list.
The American Kennel Club is only counting the dogs that are registered with them. That makes it tough to figure out the "people's" choice because most people don't have registered dogs. And, more importantly, the AKC doesn't recognize every breed or mixes or mutts. So that really limits the number of dogs that they're counting which is giving us a skewed number.
What is the most popular breed? Based on my experiences on many levels and talking to other dog professionals, in my opinion, it's the ubiquitous Pit Bull, America's folk breed.
