Hang tough girl. Take a deep breath. If you do get laid off, you get severance and unemployment, right? You may have to tighten your belt some, but you can get by on that for the short term. The job market is supposed to be opening up some, so it may just be a short term situation. Work all your angles, including (especially) the dog stuff.
I was laid off in July of '09. Two months of mind numbing boredom (not to mention moments of sheer panic). Then the local animal shelter called me about a dog that needed rescue. I mentioned being unemployed and they told me they needed a temporary part time receptionist while the regular receptionist was out on sick leave. 5 hours a day and as long as I reported it, I still got some unemployment benefits. When the regular receptionist decided not to come back, the job turned into permanent part time. When my unemployment ran out, they put me on full time. Granted, it's $10k less a year than my previous job, but I'm able to keep my house, car, dogs, and still get a meal a day.
Not a long-term career move, but at least I'm surviving.
I know it's easy to say, but try not to stress too much about the future. I had moments of overwhelming panic and depression. Seriously thinking that I might lose my house and dogs and have to move into a homeless shelter. That was a real possibility too. There were times when I'd get out a stop watch and just tell myself if I could get through the next 60 seconds I'd be okay. Truly had to take it minute by minute rather than even consider anything beyond getting through the day. I highly recommend getting a stop watch for just that reason. I no longer think about what if, or the future. I just run on instinct and sheer nerve sometimes. Before losing my job, I was always obsessing and worrying. If losing my job has taught me anything it's that you can't predict what will happen next.
Think of this as an exciting time in your life. You can evolve, change, reinvent yourself, whatever. So many times you hear about people who lose their jobs and start a new business or new career, etc. YOU can be one of those people!! Keep your chin up and try to see the positive that can come from this.
