PETA Thoughts on PETA Philosophy

Postby Marinepits » February 23rd, 2009, 3:19 pm

I received this email the other day and thought it would make for a good discussion, so feel free!

I suspect everyone has been beaten over the head with the
heavy handed propaganda attempt to guilt Americans into adopting a
shelter dog rather then purchasing a dog of their choice from a
reputable breeder.

"Every time you buy a dog from a breeder you kill a shelter dog"

So lets apply this kind of rationale to other purchases we might make.
I suggest that all those folks who dress up in lettuce leaves or less -
or stand around berating honest citizens who love their dogs -
or send their hard earned money to support peta do the following:

the next time you take your date...or your family and kids out to dinner -
throw away the menu -tell your wait person that you would much rather
have some platters of food left over from other diner's meal - in fact -
if anything was sent back to the kitchen because it was not right
thats your first choice for dinner tonight!
You know how important it is to 'waste not- want not' - all that
perfectly
edible food going to waste is a crime
and you don't want to be a criminal now do you?

The next time you save up to buy a car - don't go supporting those terrible
car dealerships -
you know they just keep cranking out new cars one after the other - it's a
glut on the economy and the landscape since junk
yard after junk yard is filled to overflowing with the rusting
rotting remains of old cars - now thats where you should spend your money!
Show you really care - adopt a car! - sure some repair cash, upgrades
and lots of elbow grease and you will have a ride to be proud
of.....and think how noble you will feel knowing another car dealership
might fold this month.

Need surgery? well heck - don't go for a pricey over-educated doctor -
fly down to a third world nation and support all those folks
who just want to make a living - you know in your heart that paying
those fancy-shamcey doctors is just a sign that you don't really
care about the rest of the world - doctors with less training need to
make a living too you know. And, if you survive the surgery -
think how superior you will feel to all your molly-coddled friends and
family members!

Yes - thats the ticket - show your superiority when you take the moral
high road - you don't want clean clothes or safe cars -
you don't want fresh food when you can dumpster dive!

You are better then everyone else and everyone will just be soooooooo
impressed!

One last, all important peta-thought -

"Every time a woman gives birth an orphan remains homeless."

"Peta think" - enjoy the leftovers and be happy about it.
Never make someone a priority in your life when that someone treats you like an option.

That article is slightly biased - comparing animals in shelters to:
1. something that was not right
2. a dilapidated car that won't be any good w/o investing lots of money in it
3. a crappy doctor who will kill you

Ditto... :| It's skewed against shelter animals...

I'm sorry but when I see the word PETA all I can think is GINORMOUS ASSHOLES. And that article reads like this to me:

Can we just clarify that not all people who advocate rescuing a dog are PeTA supporters?

I would say most of us here are all for adopting as opposed to breeding for JOE SCHMOE and JOHN Q. PUBLIC (people who do not show/work/etc) and are violently opposed to PeTA.

I don't wanna be lumped in with those nutjobs.
Time to nut up or shut up.

It's not really a relevant article IMHO. Left over bad food doesn't equal a life to me. :|

I do not think that every dog bred kills a shelter dog...I do think everytime someone buys from a BYB, a shelter dog is imperilled. Buying from a BYB means you have no more guarantees, no more information and probably less recourse than adopting from a shelter if you end up with a dog with problems, but have encouraged someone to have another litter because they raised a few bucks.

That is not the same as reputable breeders that are breeding for the betterment of the breed, back their product, and have homes and target markets.

I'm not a PETA supporter anymore (Thanks, PBT! ), and while I find the article kind of amusing - you can't compare the welfare of a living being w/things, like cars and food. :rolleyes2:

On the other hand - I am now on my THIRD "back yard bred" dog, and I have a funny feeling that all of them would've ended up in a shelter (or worse) for one reason or another eventually. I don't actively encourage or condone byb or "ooops" litters, yet I constantly find myself living w/such pups anyway. So, I guess I'm at least partially to blame?

*Sigh*

Christine, I would say yes only if you actively sought them out and paid for them. Since I know you didn't pay for Mick...then nope.

Well, honestly, I look at it this way: Once any puppy is BORN he/she deserves a chance at a good life w/a responsible owner. Mutt or pure breed, doesn't matter. Shelter dog or byb puppy, makes no difference.

The blame should be placed solely on the people who allow those litters to happen in the first place, because they want to make some quick bucks or fail to speuter their animals. Who else is going to take care of their "mess" if not some kindhearted person who is willing to take on a dog of questionable background?
I am more and more in favor of breeding licenses, and very stiff fines for people who don't have one... especially the ones who crank out litters twice a year and then put them on CL.

I just saw an ad for a Pit/Dachshund Mix... :puke:
The owner "will be forced to bring him to the local high-kill shelter if someone doesn't step in and rescue that poor boy ASAP!" People like that should be :biggun:

You get them to go on ahead and relax those adoption rules a bit and I'll happily take my 5 orphans and raise them just as my own...
Dont breed or buy while shelter animals die!
