Question re: adoption contracts

Postby pitbullmamaliz » January 19th, 2011, 2:27 pm

Just out of curiosity, for those of you who run rescues, how are your adoption contracts worded in regards as to how long until the dog officially belongs to the adopter and not the rescue? I only ask because something reminded me of the rescue I used to work with. Her contracts were about 7 pages long and worded to say, in effect, that the dog would never truly belong to the adopter and the rescue could come remove it at any time for no reason. Is that normal? I find it somewhat appalling. I'm all for home checks before hand and post-adoption checks as well, but I can't imagine signing something saying that Inara could be taken from me at any time for any reason.

At the time of adoption, the adopter signs off on liability. However, we can confiscate the dog if the contract is breached at any time. That's not for "no reason" though. They have to specifically breach the contract.

Same. Basically DRAW can confiscate if we find the dog isn't receiving proper care, is being used for fighting, has been given away to a third party, is being chained outside etc.

Alright, that seems fair. I just remember being very surprised about the wording in the contract.

Well its not a dog but a friend of mine does adoption for cats on her own. She has a shoestring attachment to a rescue organization for vet care. This sometimes allows her to get a cut rate for services. We just went and picked up a cat after a year and a half due to neglect. She would never remove a cat from a caring home but will pull one in a heart beat for not taking care of them properly no matter how long ago the adoption was.
