Last week, I planned on helping care for this girl in the shelter, Reggie. The first time I saw her, I knew I couldn't spend more time with her because I would be hooked. The ears, the piggy little face... she was too perfect. The next time I saw her, I took her out to get pictures and spent some time playing with her. I was with a girl who does some pit bull rescue, and so we talked about what we could do for her. She was starting to get sick but we had no where to take her. We knew she would need surgery for her cherry eye, but I was willing to pay for that surgery, as well as any boarding she would need until a foster home could be found. We discussed back and forth about what we could do for her for the next few days. There wasn't a worry about her safety, they were supposed to call if she was urgent, and the shelter seemed to have plenty of space.
Unfortunately on Monday I got a message saying she was euthenized. There must have been some misunderstanding... she had too many medical issues... and being a pit bull, who was sick... she lost her space. It really broke my heart, as I had been so excited about helping her. She deserved a good home. She didn't deserve to die.
I'm sorry I didn't take you home that day, Reggie. I'm sorry your owners didn't think you deserved a chance. I'm sorry that people think you aren't worth it. I'm sorry you didn't get to spend the rest of your life happy and warm.
Please remember Reggie... and all of the homeless pit bulls that never got a chance at a real home.
