My shelter buddy

Postby Hundilein » June 10th, 2009, 5:33 pm

The dog I've been working with for the past week at the shelter was put down today. I know that he is only one of many here, and is not the last dog I will work with and not be able to help, and I knew this day would probably come, and I've made my peace with it, but it's still sad. He brought a smile to my face many times and saved my sanity here more than once. The shelter manager was kind enough to let me give him one last walk and romp in the play yard. I'll miss seeing him wagging his tail at me and planting his butt on the floor to get me to take him out of his kennel when I go back there.

I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

I'm so sorry they cannot all be saved. You were his friend and hero, able to bring joy in his limited lifetime. How wonderful is that? Something to truly be proud of.

Sarah, that is always the hardest part of the job. Some folks simply vow to never allow themselves to care about another dog in the shelter to shield themselves, which is a sad way to work and IMHO means you aren't giving your best.

Me...I know that some will make it and some won't. It makes me work my butt off for the very best, give what I can to all and celebrate the successes.

This is the toughest job you really love.
