Pet Loss Counseling
If you or a family member have great difficulty in accepting your pet.s death and cannot resolve feelings of grief and sorrow, you may want to discuss those feelings with a person who is trained to understand the grieving process such as a grief counselor, member of the clergy, social worker, psychologist, or physician. See your healthcare provider or refer to the yellow pages for behavioral health professionals in your area. A listing of Iowa pet loss counselors can be found at these sites:

The Helpline is staffed by veterinary students who understand the importance of the bond you share with your animal friend and the emotions involved when that bond is threatened or altered. The students have received training by professional grief counselors and undergo continued supervision by a licensed clinical social worker.
The C.A.R.E. Helpline focus is on the array of emotions related to pet loss. We are unable to discuss specifics of your animal's illness and ask that you contact your veterinarian for questions of a medical nature.
Also, the C.A.R.E. Helpline is not a mental health hotline and volunteers are not trained to provide mental health services. If the concerns presented during a Helpline call are beyond the scope of the services available, volunteers will assist you in identifying appropriate referral options in your community.
