Poop Quality

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

I switched Toby from Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice to Nature's Variety, Instinct, Duck formula ( http://www.naturesvariety.com/Instinct/dog/kibble/duck )
I was hoping a grain free kibble would help with his alleged allergies. It was worth a try, anyway. He has done very well on this food and really likes it. However his poops are more pellet like and very small, but the alarming part is that they are VERY solid. I think the Montmorillonite Clay may have something to do with that. He doesn't seem to have any trouble actually passing the stools, so am I just being concerned for nothing? I also read that the citric acid if soaked could cause bloat, so is that a concern if I were to soak his food?

I don't know about the food specifically, but...

if his poops are hard, the only thing I would watch for is that he can pass them well, and you said he can.

from the perspective I gained from my own vet and my time at the animal emergency hospital : the biggest suspected cause as I understand it is genetics. Beyond that, its kind of a "can't hurt" + shrug attitude. As a caution I personally avoid large meals for the boys an hour or so before or after very exuberant exercise, but thats about it...

for what that was worth :)
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

I like a good firm poop! lol

I've read that about the citric acid before too - I would think as long as you soaked it for like 10 minutes it would be fine. I mean, it's going to get wet in their stomachs anyway, so if it's going to expand, it's going to do so regardless of whether you soak it or not. Right?
