To Make Liver Squares
Boil liver for ten to fifteen minutes and drain. Cook at low heat on either side for ten minutes in the oven. Let cool and cut into squares or cubes. :|

I found this recipe, but haven't tried it yet.

Beef heart is like steak, really muscle-y...so it works well to just boil or nuke it and slice it into training size pieces. I often boil it with some garlic cloves for some extra flavor. (for the dogs...I won't eat that nasty crap) It freezes well after being cooked...and I'll pull it out frozen and it'll defrost as I train.

Liver...I've got lots of recipes for liver. It's mushier, so it's best (I found) to mix it with a binding agent and a starch of some sort...(thus the popularity of "Liver Brownies" as bait). I've boiled, dehydrated, baked, nuked it...and plain, it makes a mushy dog treat...I always use it in a recipe now. (see my favorites below)

Liver Bits (a nice variation on the traditional liver bait recipes)

1 lb. chicken liver
1 box graham crackers
3 Tbsp. molasses
Dash of cinnamon (optional)

Process ingredients in food processor. Pour into microwave safe container, approximately 8" square or round. Microwave on high until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. (about 7 minutes) When cooked, turn out of pan immediately, allow the bottom to dry since it will be damp from condensation, and cut into squares while still warm.

Spread bits on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake at 200° for 1.5 hours.

Freeze or refrigerate.

Sawyer's Liver Bites:
(wheat free)

3 c. cooked oats
1 1/2 c. cooked liver (pureed)
1/2 c. beef fat
3 large eggs
1 tbsp. molasses
Dash of cinnamon or garlic powder (optional)

350 degree oven
Mix all ingredients until well blended. Spread onto greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15 min. or until center is done. Then cool, score and serve or freeze.

I have to open the windows...because I find the smell extremely foul...but they do love their liver/heart treats!

the dogs at work eat dried beefheart (plain, I assume), and LOOOOVE it, so you could dehydrate it or whatever.

Now beefheart, if you can get it small enough (its rich!) would be a WICKED training treat. I can't speak for the liver but I assume...
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

If the smell is making you :puke: , then dehydrating will just prolong that feeling...lol. It smells up the house much longer!

Well......**Ahem**........after hearing what a ""delicious aroma" it will bring to the indoors, I'm thinking that Liver can stay in the Freezer TIL SPRING........ :puke:

The Heart? It's in there still too. I'm not sure WHEN any day is a 'good day' to boil-up-a-hunka-Heart... :rolleyes2:

Don't boil it chop it up and toss it outside and let the dogs be dogs. My grandma used to boil that stuff for our dogs back in the day. The smell wasn't bad at all but I know the dogs liked it more in its raw form.

HA!
GOTCHA'!
I-NEVER-CLAIMED-TO-BE-A-TRAINER, Now did I Miss Smarty pants????
THAT'S why YOU'RE supposed to come out here and HELP ME.

The liver was for a DELICIOUS treat..........my family complains ENOUGH about the accompanying smells associated from this dog. I'm not sure I can BAKE BEEF LIVER in the closed up house AND still have a home to live in, lol....

Truthfully, I'm still just too busy. AND I don't have an OVEN, remember??

but yeah, I'll probably thaw the beef heart this week........... :rolleyes2:

Don't you have a stove...or a microwave? I nuke my meat all of the time (drumroll please)...and don't worry the smell won't linger.
