? About Feeding DE

Postby furever_pit » October 16th, 2011, 6:22 pm

I have just started feeding my dogs DE. I am having some trouble getting them to eat it all though.

So for those of you who feed it, do you mix the DE with anything? I thought about adding water to Dylan's kibble to get him to eat it but I'm not sure if the DE works against parasites the same way once it is wet.

For Gigz and Raven, I have sprinkled the DE on their raw food but some of it falls on the ground and doesn't get licked up.

Should I just give a larger dose than they really need since you can't overdose on it?

Thanks in advance.

I usually put it in some wet food, either canned or in with yogurt and my dog licks it right up. I was giving it to her about every couple months which reminds me, I should give her some soon.

I gave her about 3/4 of a teaspoon for a 50 pound dog. I've done this for over a year and she never had any problem with it. I took some myself too, stirred it into orange juice and drank it. It was sort of gritty but had no taste and didn't bother me any.

Diatomaceous Earth. It's a very useful product that you can pick up at any feed store, just make sure you get the food grade. Given orally, it acts as an internal parasiticide. Rubbed on a dogs coat, it helps with fleas, ticks, flies, etc. You can also use it with livestock. I also sprinkle it in the yard and kennel runs.

This is where I buy mine, I got the 10 pound bag for $14 --

They have some info about using it for pets --

And for humans --

They sort of make it sound like it cures everything!

But it does seem to kill bugs and we put it around the outside doors in the basement to keep the insects out. We also used it for ants too. I don't like spraying poisons so would rather use "dinosaur dust".

Oooo... that's a great price! Thanks for letting me know. I bought my 10 pounds a year ago and still have quite a lot of it left, but I'll get it from Tractor Supply next time.
