Questions about RAW feeding and age

Postby HappyChick » November 29th, 2009, 11:49 am

How young can you start a puppy on RAW feeding? What about a three month old that has only been fed "whatever" dog food the previous "owners" had available? Should they be started with strictly chicken for one week then introduce another form of protein? What about chicken jerky treats...are those o.k. to give during the first intro week? What about giving veggies during the first week and thereafter? Any information regarding starting a three month old on RAW is much appreciated.

I'll tell you all later today why I'm asking these questions!

Thanks!

I think Katrina starts feeding her pups RAW pretty much as soon as they're weaned... hopefully she can help get you started.

If it was me, I'd start w/one food source (probably either ground or cut-up chicken), nothing else during the first week, just add a supplement (like Nupro, for instance). I would gradually add other things afterwards, just to make sure that the puppy tolerates the switch well. Treats in moderation.

Are you getting a new puppy??? :D

I've only had one puppy raw experience and that was with Junie. I started her as soon as she was over her parvo scare at 8 weeks.

As far as any dog that has been fed whatever, yes I would start with just one protein source for the week. Then gradually add in other sources. Some people do a gradual switch (from whatever to raw), some do cold turkey. I've always done cold turkey with any dog in my home and never had any issues. Ages range from 3-4 months to 12 years. My 12 year old was the hardest and not done cold turkey but I eventually did get him fully switched.

Thanks for the RAW feeding information. I emailed Katie and she was a big help! So Leni is on just chicken at the moment. I started with just chicken meat and after hearing back from Katie, added a little bit of bone too. I'm wondering if I should be concerned that Leni hasn't had a BM in a couple of days. Her belly is not bloated or anything like that. I sort of suspect that her body is adjusting to the high quality of the chicken as opposed to the cheap dog food they were giving her. Could her body be using up most of the nutrients in the chicken and maybe there just isn't much to eliminate at the moment? We have her first vet appointment later today. I'm so excited!
