Collar Width

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby Tubular Toby » August 11th, 2010, 4:29 pm

Ah I am so torn on what collar width to get Toby. He has a 20" neck and weighs 63 lbs. I was leaning towards 1.5" but the fabric I want would look better in 2". This is for an every day wear collar (although since my roommate got a puppy, he is usually naked inside since they wrestle all the time). When we go for walks, he wears an easy walk harness (leash clipped to his collar AND harness).

Here are a few pictures of him.

1"

1.5" (I believe... Pretty sure.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/ ... 2_5109.jpg

I have a feeling he looks good in a 1.5". But I have two one inch collars on him now just to see what it looks like and I think snugged up next to each other, he looks fine in two inches. But it also seems to me that 2" is nice when showing off, but for every day wear, 1.5" would be better. I am also worried that perhaps his neck isn't long enough for 2". Haha

What are your opinions? Any examples of similarly sized dogs in 1.5" or 2" collars?

Thanks!
-Kristen

I'm a big fan of the 1.5". It takes a big dog to pull off a 2" without it looking like a neck brace.

True that.... haha, I am thinking that using two one inch collars to see what a two inch collar would look like is a little deceiving. The colors are all broken up and not nearly as... solid has a single two inch collar would be. So I'm sure it would look a bit different. I am heavily leaning toward 1.5". I like it a lot. Hard to believe that little .5" makes such a big difference! :noWay:

It really does.

Cut out a 2" wide piece of paper and wrap it around Toby's neck - that may give you a better idea than 2 1" collars. :)

Riggs is 45 pounds and has a 2 inch collar that looks fine on him. A lot depends on the thickness of the collar (like the Blocky Dogs collars) and the build of the dog.

My crew all wear 1 1/2" colors. :| and they are built about as differently as three dogs can be.

I have 1.5" collars for Score...the 3/4" Lupine I used to have him wear seem too tiny now...*shakes fist at pit bull people*.

I did however order him a 2" collar for his new flyball collar...the purple/gold ribbon only came in 2". But I wouldn't have him wear it normally.

Kinzyl has both. I started out with the 1.5 a few times but when I ordered a ready made collar from Lisa at 2" it looked great also.

This is the only picture of Riggs I have in his 2 inch collar. It's not very thick so it doesn't stand "off" of his neck too much. He's not a big dog, though someone recently told me that they thought he was a 60 pound dog. He's only 15 inches at the shoulder and 45 pounds. A lot depends on the build and shape of the dog. His measurements match Connor's, he's shorter in height, and shorter in length, but his collar size is the same, his weight pull harness is the same (except the length of course.)

It's about proportion... He's very stocky but it still works for him. But a block dog collar because it's about 5 layers would look silly. That collar is very flexible and slim.

If you remember Alice, my giraffe dog foster, she looked great in a two inch collar. But she was long in every direction - long legs, tail, tongue, neck, well... long everywere!

omd michelle, Riggs looks like such a sour little beast in that picture :lol3: He looks like he is giving someone major stink eye!

On the topic of collars, I have a 2 inch, and perhaps because it is quite stiff in how it is made, it does seem like a neck brace. Oscar is 75 lbs and still... We have several others at 1.5 "-I much prefer how they look on him and how they sit, but they are for the most part, much more flexible in construction then the 2 " I have for him.
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Thanks everyone! I have decided to go with a 1.5" for now. It's going to be a collarmania one, so fabric and not too thick, but still decided that 1.5" would probably fit best. He's had one before and I was pleased with it.

Still an interesting conversation.

Riggs is a beast in that picture! (In the best way possible. ;))

I was torn between 1.5" and 2" as well. I got the 1.5" and I'm glad I did. The 2" would have been too much for her. She has a 18" neck and is 55lbs.

Michelle, Riggs looks awesome!

I'm a 2" collar girl myself but neither Gator or Dylan can take a thick collar like Blocky Dogs. They would look stupid I think. I keep looking at the Mali pup and wondering if he will ever grow into a 2" collar, doubt it.

Make sure to share pics of Toby's new bling when you get it! :D

Here's his new 2" collarmania collar! I think I'm addicted to 2" collars on him now...he's got a giraffe neck, so he pulls it off. :)

I know I'm late but I'll weigh in here. ;)

I like 2" collars on my girl. She is about 50lbs and has a pretty long neck. The 1.5" width looks a bit small on her (to me) but I do have a few in that width for her. Her neck is about 16.5"

I think if you're going with a fabric wrapped or trim lined collar you can get away with the wider ones without adding a lot of bulk. If you're going with a super thick leather or multi-layered nylon collar it's probably best to go a bit smaller to make sure it's not a neck brace and that it fits the dog comfortably.

The new collar looks great by the way!! Wow he does have a looong neck! Lucky you! lol
