(CNN) -- A 4-pound Chihuahua is lucky to be alive after an owl swooped down and tried to snatch it during a neighborhood walk.

The dog, Chico, and owner George Kalomiris were taking a late-night stroll in their Chicago suburb of Crystal Lake, Illinois, when a great horned owl attacked.

Kalomiris said he lunged at the owl, which got caught in the dog's leash, and ultimately was able to scare it away.

Chico's vest saved him because it prevented the owl's talons from digging in deeply enough to latch onto him, according to Kalomiris.

Chico was treated for a puncture wound at a nearby animal hospital, Kalomiris said.

Wow. Craziness.
That little Chi is lucky.

In FL, the tiny dog owners were always telling me how they didn't really let their dogs go outside because of owls and hawks. I always thought they were being a tad paranoid, evidently I was wrong.

We have Eagles around here that are fully capable of taking a good sized salmon, let alone a small dog or a cat!

I'd be much more worried about a gator!

Mark said I should make weighted safety vests so that little dogs are too heavy to carry off.

I would also worry about the Ospreys and arnt there Golden Eagles in Fl. still? That borders on not so small dog snatching!

That wasn't an owl Joyce, that was a great Roc.

bahahaha :lol3: priceless.

We have bald eagles here, when the pups are younger and first going outside (so 1-3 lbs-ish) and if mumma isn't out with them, we have to watch them for this particular reason.
