Houston, TX - A 2 wk-old infant was fatally mauled on Saturday night by the family dog.

The baby had been sitting alone in an infant carrier inside of the family home - the infant's mother was outside of the house, looking in through a window.

According to multiple reports, the family dog, a Labrador Retriever, pushed through french doors and approached the baby.

After sniffing the child, the dog began to attack.

Though the family rushed to pull the dog off of the newborn, the damage was already done - the child was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, but died five hours later.

The infant has been identified as Brayden McCollen.

Few other details about this tragic incident have been shared - no word on how long the child had been left in the room alone.

An investigation is being conducted to see if the infant's parents will be charged with negligence.

The dog is being held in quarantine - after 10 days, his fate will be determined.

Tragic and senseless and easily prevented. And need I point out that if it had been a pit bull the breed would've been mentioned in the headline and the dog would already be dead. Oh yeah, there would also be a breed ban being considered.

The parents should absolutely be charged with negligence.

But Labs are such good dogs!!!!

The other day at work we had to draw blood on a lab. She was a nice enough dog, I took her back up to the lobby and she drug me to another client's dog [Golden Retriever], I couldn't exactly yank her away because her owner was right there, as I was handing over the leash the lab totally lunged for the golden. What appeared unprovoked. Not saying the golden didn't start something because I could see this golden in particular being a jerk, but still. Labradors are supposed to be friendly, mellow, outgoing dogs. They are supposed to be trainable yet have enough energy to be out hunting all day. The labs we see in the clinic are NOT the labs I grew up with. We've created monsters that are crazy, allergy ridden, hypothyroid, dog aggressive and human aggressive jerks.

It's a horrible tragedy, I agree the child's parents should be held responsible.

:( So sad. I wouldn't leave any animal unattended around my child.

This is sad and I agree with Joyce. No infant should be left alone with any animal.

What I want to know is, dog or not...why would you be outside with your 2 week old baby inside?

Such a terrible tragedy, since adding Fergus to my family I have grown less fond of labs as he has been bitten by them twice. My parents now have a lab pug mix that is a high energy PITA but they are really trying to work on her and burn the energy off.

i'd bet money they were "being responsible" and smoking outside so as not to smoke around the baby.
