I have come to the realization that it is time for Inara to stop interacting with other dogs. She used to LOVE playing with giant male dogs - she would throw herself on her back, wiggle around, throw her butt in their faces, etc. Well a few weeks ago there was a huge, mellow, male Great Dane on one of our walks. Inara was totally making flirty eyes at him the entire walk, so afterwards we let them meet. She was flirty for about 3 seconds and then it's like a flip switched. It was kind of like, "hey there, baby aren't you cute and OMG I love you and OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO EAT YOU IF EVER COME NEAR ME AGAIN!" Zero to sixty. No damage, pretty sure there wasn't even any slobber on the Dane. Yesterday, there was a big, mellow, male English Mastiff on our walk. His owners know Inara's propensity towards bitchiness, but she has also always loved their English Bulldog before, so we agreed to let them meet. Once again, flirty for about 3 seconds and then she flipped out on him. Again, no damage, not even spit (thank god for incredible bite inhibition!). And she was on her flat collar with a nice loose leash each time.

So yeah, she has officially lost dog interaction privileges. Kind of bums me out as she always used to love flirting with the big dumb boys, and she was funny while she would do so - just a total hussy. And this switch kind of came about in just the past couple of months. There are a couple dogs (only 1 locally) that she used to be able to play with off-leash, but now I'm not so sure about letting her do that either.

She's becoming so much less reactive on leash that you would think she'd be less bitchy, but nope, getting moreso. Kind of disappointing. I think I'm going to start her l-theanine up again and see if that can level her out a bit again. It's like she's bi-polar - some days she's a total dream and we're a perfect team and happy, and then there are days (like yesterday) where I just want to beat her to death because she is acting so obnoxiously. Fortunately the good days majorly outweigh the bad, but man.

Anyway, just wanted to vent.

Stone's switch has flipped too...he used to be able to hang out in the yard with the other dogs...no problems whatsoever. The past month, I've had to pull him off of Squash (other foster dog) and Puzzle...as he grabs their heads and won't let go. Puzzle ended up with minor punctures and scrapes...Squash had nothing. So while Stone apparently has good bite inhibition, he's staying true to his heritage...(his mom has mauled a few dogs)

Ugh, that sucks, Erin. At least Inara isn't grabbing the other dogs, just flipping out on them. That's got to make it hard for your household.

Very hard to live with here...as he's stuck in solitary and we're c/r now...since I can't trust him at all. He also jumps my fence, so he's stuck on a tie-out so he doesn't get anyone else's dogs.

since I really don't want him here anyway...it makes life very stressful.

I sympathize with you both :)
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

River acts like she wants to meet other dogs, especially big dogs... but then about 3 seconds after they sniff, she decides that it wasn't such a good idea after all and acts like it's all their fault. :rolleyes2: I just either don't let her greet big dogs, or we have a 1-2 second sniff and then we move on. No lingering.

Well, that's no fun.

Pinup weekend should be interesting...

lol...my thoughts exactly. Score says he wants nothing to do with Inara...either of 'em.

The Wiener says he has the perfect thing to calm Liz's Inara down...*boomchickawowow*

Toby and I are doing pretty well right now, but I'm just glad to know that I'm not the only one that feels this way sometimes! Haha

Although it is more fun when dogs can have friends, luckily it's not mandatory. Toby has no dog friends now. :( The one attempt at reintroducing him to Tilly, my old roommate's dog, was a flop. But he was also on a leash and there was an obnoxious, strange dog next door yapping its head off. Maybe under better circumstances... they were so cute together.

Yeah. :rolleyes2: Although as long as she's in obedience mode and doesn't have permission to go visit another dog while on leash, we'll be fine.

That is completely (or was) Veronica; but we ended her dog greeting days years ago. She was all happy, happy, sniff, sniff...then head over the neck, up on her toes, still as a statue...and making a very embarrassing snarly sound as she was hauled away.

She is very reactive in general, and has weird fear issues...so she can actually be Ok (interacting on-leash) with certain dogs if she has a very long period of time to get used to them. Problem is it's hard to find anyone to give you that kind of time unless they're close friends or family - and we don't know anyone with dogs right now. (She does have 1 boyfriend she gets to walk with and play on leash with periodically...but that's it).

I was very disappointed when I realized that despite our best efforts appropriate species specific social skills eluded her.
