Junkie. I use it for both myself and Inara. It's all I cook with now and Inara gets a decent amount every evening as dessert, melted and mixed with her missing link. I get the Louana brand from WalMart. It doesn't smell/taste like coconut which I prefer since I cook with it. And it's cheap. :)

We use salmon oil for the dogs, and coconut for us.

I've been wondering about cooking with it myself, but wasn't 100% on board with trying it. Now I think I will give it a whirl, my MAIN concern was tasting it.

The Louana from WalMart is taste-free, Jenn. I had originally tried an expensive, organic, virgin, blah blah blah that I'd bought for Inara way back when. Used it to cook green beans and they had a taste of coconut. Not unpleasant, just not what I wanted. So I'm really glad this one is flavorless, at least to me. Inara still inhales it so it must have some flavor. :)

There is nothing worse to me food wise, than meat or something being sweet that isn't "supposed" to be... (at least in my book, LOL) Well and nuts placed in cake, chocolate, or the like ~ HURL! The next time I work up the urge to venture into Wal-Mart I will definitely put that on my list. If my chicken tastes like coconut though, I'm going to hunt you down. ;)

I saw a huge improvement in one of my huskies when I started giving him coconut oil. It helped his mobility and overall health. For my convenience, I'd buy coconut oil capsules and just toss a couple in his bowl when I fed him. I also cook with it for myself and/or take a couple of capsules. I

've continued giving coconut oil to my current dogs, and I've read recently that molasses is also good for dogs. So I made "puppy power bars" where I mixed a jar of coconut oil with a jar of molasses and a jar of organic peanut butter and spread it into a pan. It turns into a fudge-like product. Every morning I cut out a small piece and put it in each dog's bowl with their breakfast. They absolutely love it.

They also get diatomaceous earth mixed with sunflower oil added to their food. And sometimes fish oil capsules. I try to rotate through the different oils on a regular basis.

Huge improvement in our dogs, too-- particularly Luna. Her allergies have improved tremendously, and I have been told by several people that hers is the only Shar Pei coat that doesn't make them itch. She used to make me itch something fierce... not since coconut oil. Also, the dogs' coat and skin condition had improved so much that we made it through about 15 months with no chemical flea treatment.

We buy Nutiva through Amazon and have four 15oz canisters autoshipped every 6 weeks.

We used to do salmon oil, as well, but have since started doing one fish meal every week-10days instead.

Follow up: If you make "puppy power bars", you don't need to refrigerate unless you live with the world's most evil cat. He pushed the pan off the shelf last night. I woke up this morning to a pan licked clean and guilty dogs with tummy aches and peanut butter scented farts. Everyone got an activated charcoal capsule and no breakfast.

DE is said to be a natural wormer (http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/parasites.html#DE). My guys are horrible about eating things they shouldn't, particularly duck poop when we're at the park and snacking out of the litter box when I'm not looking. I figure a little DE regularly will help with any parasites they might pick up.
