Venison - rough adjustment?

Postby pitbullmamaliz » December 15th, 2012, 11:17 am

So those of you who are on Facebook know that I recently got a new chest freezer and filled it with free venison scraps. Inara's been doing raw for a very long time now, can't remember when I switched her back over from kibble, but it's been a long time. She's never had trouble before. She has a stomach of steel. But for some reason the venison is really giving her issues - not necessarily bad, just different.

When she was on chicken and pork, she'd poop once a day. On venison, she poops every time she goes outside, and sometimes multiple times per trip outside. They are very good poops - they're all nice and firm and small, but there is a TON of it. Strange. Not necessarily bad, just different. And then this morning she puked - it was digested meat and some bone shards. Again, not bad necessarily, just different.

She's still drinking water (bit more than usual maybe?), peeing okay, playing, sleeping, etc so I'm not concerned, just confused.

Anybody else's dog adapt slowly to venison?

It gave Toby diarrhea at first, but now he eats it just fine. But Inara's situation is more puzzling.

She's probably eating a lot more bone than she's used to. And remember, deer bones are heavier and have a LOT more marrow in them. Our dogs drink a lot more when they are eating a lot of bones, and definitely poop a lot more.

Oh, I didn't think about the marrow. That's good to know, thank you!

Would the extra bone & marrow account for extra-funky poop smell? Inara's is still as odorless as poop can be, but Janine said that her three (now on day 14 of raw) are peeling paint with their poop.

Some dogs get gassy/smelly when switching food, regardless of what the switch is. Venison is pretty rich to start with, so it may take a little while for them to settle in.

Also keep in mind with feeding raw venison, it is a very lean meat so it's a good idea to add some extra fat like chicken backs or chicken skin to make for the lack of fat in the venison.

She's getting coconut oil and missing link.

Another good source of fat is whole milk cottage cheese and full fat plain yogurt. You can also give her any raw fat trimmings off your food, such as fat from a steak or roast trimmed off before you cook it.

She's not losing any weight (not that she needs to) so I don't think I need to add anything more. How do I know if she needs more?

I mix venison with chicken so they're not getting a straight venison meal. The first night I did all venison, Nadia puked it up at 3am. The smell was the most godawful smell in the world.

Yeah, venison puke is pretty bad.
